Life is cheap in Oakland and violent killers often have illegal weapons unavailable to the law-abiding - like full-auto AK's.
Here's the 2007-'08-'09 Oakland Murder Map. Remember that '09 is only a few months into the year and this doesn't go back to '06 and '05 and '04 etc. or further - nor does it include Richmond to the north where a great deal of similar activity in the same quantity occurs.
UPDATE: Here's a link to the SFGate.com map of Homicides in Oakland 2007/2008 that you can zoom-in and move around. Again, this is a limited year data-set of homicides only, and doesn't include armed robbery, auto theft, rape, kidnapping, arson, and all the other shit that goes down in the festering swamp of criminality that used to be a nice, relaxed, family-oriented city with large lots, sunny streets, and front yards where children could play...

Our whole county has only had 5 or 6 murders in its 100 yrs of existence. Mostly domestic squabbles and all were solved, except for the drug dealer they found floating in the river...in several garbage bags.
It started to go downhill really fast in the late 60's, right the whole Great Society Welfare Program ramped-up, but it's always been a mixed-use, industrial/residential city with some very localized, race-based violence factors. 90% of the crime is Black-on-Black in the inner urban areas.
If you notice, not much seems to happen in the Piedmont district up by the Claremont Country Club, the micro demographics are quite different there.
I was reading DOJ and FBI crime stats for support of an argument I was having with some lefty bunghole and I was shocked to see that 48% of this nations violent crime is committed by 1% of the population...African American males aged between 15 and 35.
Seems like these 4 dead police officers are part of that statistic.
Dang, that looks almost as bad as Philly's murder map. My husband and I were very sorry to hear of the 4 murdered officers.

Hi Thud, Grizzly & Hammer - IMO it's the burning, corrosive, self-destructive distillate of end-stage Welfare Stateism applied like a gruesome pharmacological test-case - this is where Social Engineering leads.
Thud - I think it's sorta like what happens to dense concentrations of Muslims in Paris suburbs, shit starts going up in smoke.

That is just astonishing. I wonder if there is a map like that for Chicago.
