Fisheses

So far the Pentax Optio W60 does a good job of keeping the water out of its innards, and has a wide variety of features that enable things such as panoramas and underwater color compensation.
But I've taken just about as many pictures with the camera in my phone, including panoramas - I just forgot the cable to suck them out and put them on the Asus WEeenie...

I believe. . .
a Picasso triggerfish, also known as a humu-humu-nuku-nuku-apu-aha.
Haven't seen one since we left Hawaii. Beautiful fish. miss the place (except for the expense).

Hi B Woodman! - Given California's taxes and expenses, Hawaii's taxes seem minuscule, plus nobody is in a big damn hurry! :-)

On the other hand, tourism is down near 30%, which has definite effects on life on the islands.

Our second daughter and son-in-law live on Maui, and are having to scratch a bit to get by.

As for the Optio, I have the previous model, and it was great fun in the water between Lahaina and La Perousse Bay, even with Ahihi-Kinau being closed down. Good for kayaking, too.

Triggerfishy looks tasty.

Hi steveH - The drop in tourism is noticeable, but it's also what we like about off-peak - it's insane later in May and throughout the Summer when you can smell that the west-side infrastructure is being over taxed... We haven't hit Ahihi bay yet - and every time we've been to La Perouse it's late and the seas and winds are up. Honolua is pretty close...
Haji - Not sure how tasty the fat little guy actually is! He eats coral and reef-junk. :-)

Asus?

I've been looking at getting one soon. Perfect size for writin' on the go, from my view.

You seem...less than pleased with its performance??? Please, do tell.

Hawaii. Never been, but I'd love to see it some day. Your lens skillz will have to suffice, for now.

B&N - The Asus is fine actually, even downloaded and watched a movie on it (Blue Hawaii) instead of the wretched in-flight.
It's just fewer gigahertz (1.32) and all that nerdy chest-pounding stuff - the 10-inch with 6-hr battery works good. Chose one based on what minimum keyboard fits your fingers. :-)

"Off-peak" lasts longer than it used to.

We have one married daughter on Maui, her sister's in Minnesota.

Sort of sets up our visitation schedule.

Ahihi-Kinau got closed August 2008 'til August 2010 between La Perousse and Waiala Cove. Which sort of affected our visit the day we went down there.

As for eating the humu...I understand the Hawaiians thought they made pretty good fuel for cooking if they were dried.

Hi steveH! - We have had to push our own "off-peak" back further and further as more family-groups agglomerate around the BBQ and take-over earlier and earlier. I thought kids had to stay in school until May? We don't have any kids and do not understand the current non-schedule.
Also weren't aware of a closing notice for Ahihi Bay, but this time around we haven't been down past The Shops at Wailea so would provbably not discover it until we arrived to find it. Just found it:

I've been told that Ulua are not much more tasty than you describe Humu's - it's the spear-hunt that is their main attraction.
