Thankfull Reflections on Thanksgiving
The Kitchen is done (see original - my fourth blog post back in August 2004) and the touch-up paint is dry. My computer is back up and running with just a few glitches to sort out, namely why doesn't the other HD show up, and there will be some (many) things to re-load - for which I am grateful. The green-bean casserole with crunchy onions on top is really good if you fry-up and add the secret ingredient, apple-smoked BACON! Tonight is rack of lamb with chimichurri sauce. Before:

Blogology and TSA Club-Suckers
If I were a more committed Blogger this would be better documented on the Asus EeePC's little Atom processor here, and the expression of my great frustration exhibited for all to see -- but the kitchen is finished and looks incredibly top-shelf gorgeous, there's fresh paint in a professional manner everywhere, and we're unpacking to fill the space after fifty eight-days in the wilderness (or living room) -- so the fact that my super zoot-drive high-phenom Gixxer-speed desktop took a complete shit when the breakers out on the garages fried on a rainy night last week and PG&E had to come out and replace them, is still something I'm dealing with in small bites.
The message is that BOOTMGR is missing, press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart - in a divide-by-zero mode. It keeps coming up with that. I can get to the BIOS but that's it. So I removed the drive from the box and put it into a USB/SATA case. Powered-up and plugged that sucker into the other laptop, but still can't see any of my own data files. I can see the programs and stuff, and that there's 320GB of crap there, but USER is empty and I can't get to any of my former directories, with pictures and and circles and arrows and documents of many paragraphs and spreadsheets. There's all sorts of permissions bullshit in Win-7 and I made myself the "Owner" of the drive, but still the data is doing a Che Guevara and hiding its cowardly self. It's TSA Craptastic. With the assistance of a buddy dirtbiker-computer builder nerd genius back in North Cackalacky and after some emo remote web-conferencing FAIL (the Win7 box would not submit to TSA Club groping procedures from the XP controller), we squoshed up a disc with a bunch of RAR files in order to boot to some flav of Linux - to no avail. Thinking maybe a boot from teh USB would be cute I tried that too, still no luck.
From the desk drawer I pulled out the Costco special 500MB Seagate FreeAgent to check the latest backup and it won't spin-up. You can hear it humm and click and a whirr as it goes into its windup - and then it backs off and stops. Shit crap fuck hell. No windup, no pitch. I have NEVER had a Windows "backup" actually succeed in any way. Not ever-ever-ever. Not even while employed at Corporate with a large IT operation that did us up remotely like TSA rubber glove snappers - mine always seemed to have the Goober Gremlins, and so I'm not terribly surprised but a bit annoyed since now I have some stupid eWaste to dispose of - but I can do that remotely too with a box of 5.56 luv from Federal.
Maybe there's another way to get at the data and recover it, my neighbor is CEO of a
small mobile gaming company up in San Mateo out by Electronic Arts (I think) and knows a guy who is a data recovery wizard so there are still options. There are plenty of stupid-smart people around here.
But the kitchen is freaking fantastic. Just too bad I don't have Photoshop on this micro machine, and that all the pics of the earlier wreckage and renovation are inaccessible, because I really need to blog with pictures - it's how I roll. Maybe that's why I haven't been blogging much. No piccy, no bloggy.

Moto Musings
This is basically a cut-and-paste of a little emaill conversation I had with another Motoblogger.
I think the golden age of motorcycles is always in someone's hazy-fond memories - but its also always still now! It's a little more expensive, but the technology today is fantastic. Lightweight stuff means you don't have to bench-press every corner and turn just to get around.
TwistGrip was an experiment in Urban moto attitude/culture that was slightly off-center from the major magazines, but it just didn't quite make the necessary subscription rate. The publishers are fairly successful with Thrasher (skateboard culture) and a hipster-art magazine called Juxtapoze. I did the "Xing" logo that's on the key-fobs and bumpersticker, of the tucked-in rider. My buddy knew the publishers, and he/we had been with SF based CityBike for a while, until its owner/publisher kinda went bananas and godlike and generally impossible to work-for. I had quit a while before...
For riding I still have The Mighty KTM (a '97 KTM 300 MX/C) that I trail-ride - Hollister and local riding areas. I went from Street with an '89 FZ600 to and '94 XR650L and got into Dual-Sport riding, then to a '97 XR400 when I tried racing Enduros - but I only began in my late 30's and was behind the curve the whole time.The Enduro schedule for District 36 out here is/was awfully busy and maintenance intensive. One weekend you're way up in NorCal in the wilds, the next weekend you're up in the Gold Country/Sierra backwoods, the weekend after that you're in SoCal in some hot canyon. Just a lot of driving (this state is looong!) and wrenching, even if it's just tires and air filters, and the races are on back to back weekends through the season. A lot of the AA-level "kids" are out there with dads who used-to race (and still do), with a motorhome and satellite dish - a kitchen on wheel, and often a couple bikes. I was in a tent with a camp-stove and that got old fast, especially when it rains! I found-out that the XR400 was too heavy and short for my height, so after a year or so I sold it and got the KTM 300. It's a two stroke that weighs about 30lbs less than an XR400 and makes about 10 more horse-power, but the power is torquy and manageable - not all top-end, so you can tractor around in 3rd gear and not flip-out in wheelies everywhere. But the new stuff they make is even lighter-weight and easier handling.
I used to hang out on a Usenet newsgroup, rec.motorcycles.dirt, and at various times the guys who were active on the board would get together and meet-up for a ride. We rode together in Oregon, Colorado, and Idaho and it was a good time and fun adventures but I kinda got tired of all the driving (again) and the away-time, and haven't been on one of those since 2002 so it's been a while - and that's where the "DirtCrashr" nickname comes-from.

Fix California, Fix it Like a Dog and Kill CARB
Neuter the Agencies. Don't just stop the growth of useless and unelected bureaucracies, reverse the course by cutting them off at the root. Stop the funding and get back the money.
California is a thoroughly gerrymandered state where the incredible growth-outcome was predictable since there were no hurdles or barriers to State cronyism. In 1962 The state was re-districted by Democrat Jesse Unruh who’s work since then and from beyond the grave has provided permanent safe majorities for Democrats, with an assist from dead Democrat Phil Burton in 1981.
California Democrats did to Golden State congressional districts what Hitler and Stalin once did to Poland. As a result of total-control we have a an incredible surfeit of agencies engaged in useless work, sucking the economy dry and making husks of taxpayers. Personally I would go after demonstrated fraud. I'd get rid of the agency that has caused the most damage and been complicit in supporting a fraudulent scientist with a fake doctorate degree in statistics from a UPS mail-box drop. An agency that published this fake-scientists' bogus study used to justify sweeping, costly new emission rules that would affect the rest of the nation, under the guise of "Global Warming." An agency that has from January to Octonber 2009 collected $9.7 million in total fines based on the fraudulent "research" and that has “grossly miscalculated pollution levels” of 340% over reality, used to create onerous regulations and push forward a giant tax-fraud against the citizens of California.

California is a thoroughly gerrymandered state where the incredible growth-outcome was predictable since there were no hurdles or barriers to State cronyism. As a result of total-control we have a an incredible surfeit of agencies engaged in useless work, sucking the economy dry and making husks of taxpayers. Personally I would go after demonstrated fraud. I'd get rid of the agency that has caused the most damage and been complicit in supporting a fraudulent scientist with a fake doctorate degree in statistics from a UPS mail-box drop. An agency that published this fake-scientists' bogus study used to justify sweeping, costly new emission rules that would affect the rest of the nation, under the guise of "Global Warming." An agency that has from January to Octonber 2009 collected $9.7 million in total fines based on the fraudulent "research" and that has “grossly miscalculated pollution levels” of 340% over reality, used to create onerous regulations and push forward a giant tax-fraud against the citizens of California.

What Now? STOP the Stupid - stop High-Speed Rail
Back in the day when former Governor and Senator Leland Stanford was a robber baron and used his political connections to have the state pass laws prohibiting competition for his Central Pacific railroad, the whole rail monopoly-thing was the height of high dudgeon and social injustice.
It seems now the shoe is on the other foot, and for those with a concern about the actions demonstrated by the Kelo decision that allows governments to snatch your home or other property for a "public purpose," High Speed Rail represents a HUGE potential for Super-Kelo-nomics. It's going to rob from the small landowners and give to the Unions.
While California is on the economic ropes, the tale of the tape tells a different And wtory:
Towns that are largely integral now will be split down the middle and become lobotomized by a giant Railroad Super Highway - the head separated from the body by the massively ugly structures the Utopian train-dreamers envision - or don't envision. Because it's going to really-really suck. And be really ugly.
The truth about railroads has been evident for many-many years now and it doesn't involve passenger traffic - not anymore than most ships are ocean liners, they aren't and this isn't the 19th Century either.
For one thing this is going to be unimaginably expensive, right at a time when it's least affordable. Even the We Are All Socialists Now Newsweek writes:

Two weeks ago, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced a second round of high-speed rail grants. California was awarded an additional $902 million; Florida $800 million.If it goes forward, this totally unnecessary political boondoggle is going to be a disaster. We already have cheaper and faster travel from California El Norte down to the Southland, it's called Southwest Airlines.
The biggest awards announced last January were $2.3 billion to California to begin work on an 800-mile-long, high-speed rail line tying Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay area to Los Angeles and San DiegoI pray to god that the newly inducted Congresspeeps will yank Gub'mint funding on the insanity of "high speed rail" in CA, because in order to locate those lines and the massive undertaking it will impose - including massive and monstrous and hideous construction to elevate the lines in earthquake country - there will be a LOT of Keloization taking place, and many homes will be devalued permanently, even more than the damage done by the real-estate market bubble.

Obama calls high-speed rail essential "infrastructure" when it’s actually old-fashioned "pork barrel." The interesting question is why it retains its intellectual respectability. The answer, it seems, is willful ignorance. People prefer fashionable make-believe to distasteful realities. They imagine public benefits that don’t exist and ignore costs that do.It's sheer craziness and utter nonsense to build this ridiculous 19th Century edifice - a monument to self-indulgence and wishful thinking by train-dreamers.
Consider California. Its budget is a shambles; it furloughed state workers to save money. Still, it clings to its high-speed rail project. No one knows the cost. Even if it does and the state issues $9.95 billion in approved bonds, a financing gap of almost $15 billion would remain.

The Thinnest Skin and its Enfeeblementia
listeners said they wanted to support NPR against what they perceived as a Fox-News generated attack. ...because NPR fired a news analyst, because he appeared on Fox too many times angering NPR's listeners, radio listeners angered over TV appearances, appearances where supposedly "repeated violations of NPR’s ethics codes" occurred - but Mr. Williams' right to free speech was not violated? Their ethics stink when their CEO Vivian Schiller wants Government to control the media via the FTC, and conducts federal brainstorming sessions on the "reinvention of journalism" - what utter gall, but completely in keeping with the Left's desire to silencing someone based on political speech that's inconvenient.
In 2008, I received 378 emails complaining about remarks Williams made on Fox – but I heard very little about his comments on NPR.
