Second Place

We held our John C. Garand Match yesterday and the weather was beautiful, but turnout was a bit light.  A bunch of the talent against whom we traditionally compete was back East somewhere there's some kind of big Match taking place, so good for them and their Youth Program.
I had not fired the 1944 Springfield M1 Garand in a while - not since the last Garand Match probably, so I sucked in the off-hand portion miserably, but did sufficiently OK in the Rapids and Prone. Second Place is like First Loser, so Second Place Sharpshooter is like... the story of my life.
But as a friend says, 99% of anything is just showing up, so there are all kinds of people who don't even get-up to sucking at second-place super-loser shooter-status.  And some who should have been there yesterday but weren't.  Sucks to be them anyhow.
It was fun and it appears that I'm going to be the Club Webmaster - or whatever that amounts to, of sorts.

Spring Cleaning at the end of July

In the Bedroom we had to flip the bed on its side to complete the carpet cleaning.

Tomorrow is caulking and more baseboard work out in the Dining Bamboo Room.
Maybe we can get started on the Living Room also.  Meanwhile the Hallway has more casement work than baseboard!

ATF: The White House Knew

ATF: The White House Knew - Investor's Business Daily, Inc.

Scandal: A former ATF special agent tells Congress a National Security Council staffer was informed about Operation Fast and Furious before guns allowed into Mexico wound up at the murder scene of a U.S. agent.

The latest evidence that both the White House and attorney general knew and approved of Project Gunrunner and its deadly offshoot, Operation Fast and Furious, came this week in the testimony of William Newell, ATF special agent in charge of the Phoenix office, before Rep. Darrell Issa's House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

That the "stench of cover-up," as Fox News analyst Brit Hume described the administration's handling of the matter, may reach even into the Oval Office itself was evidenced by Newell's testimony that he communicated with Kevin O'Reilly, a staffer on President Obama's National Security Council, about Operation Fast and Furious in September 2010...

Newell sent O'Reilly the requested information with the caveat, "You didn't get this from me."

Why was a National Security Council staffer asking about an operation that no one in the upper echelons of the administration was supposed to be aware of? We find it hard to believe it was for O'Reilly's personal amusement. Why would Newell request that he not be acknowledged as the source?

If even a whiff of such a scandal had occurred during the Bush administration there would have been nonstop hysterical coverage by ABC, CBS, NBC, the bastard offspring MSNBC - and even FOX. From every Democrat Senator and Congressman with a microphone endless calls for investigation would have issued forth, and calls for impeachment would have echoed through the halls of Washington DC by MoveOn.org and CodePink, among others... But from ABC, CBS, NBC and even FOX - the Media in general makes only the slightest squirming noises as they shift their worsted-wool butts in leather seats.

Busy Boy

Between supervising the installation of new sliding doors on both balconies, and beginning with my gun-buddy carpenter friend to re-do the baseboard moldings and door casements, I've been busy.
More pics to come but not today. I have a bathroom vanity to go pick-up, and there's some light electrical work and furniture moving on Teh List. And the Master Bedroom will get a fresh coat of paint for the first time in fifteen years, after the new clerestory windows are installed...

UPDATE: The windows guys are here and on the roof cutting holes...

Rage Against The Machine - Credit Due?

Why doesn't Rage Against The Machine get any credit here?  Berserker hated and raged on the EU Machine and the political correctness crap that was tearing his country apart, and in the fine Olde Norwegian tradition he went crazy-off - Berserk is a form of rage-fighting that they seem to espouse?
Or is "Rage" just a weenie-jerk tantrum band, all noise and no action?

Norwegian Amok - the Berserker & Dionysiac Fighting

When I first saw his picture I thought, "Hey! It's the Dude from Wiki-leaks!"  Separated at birth?

Anyhow, the Berserker-thing reminds me of other cultures with a similar class or style of fighting: In the Philippines it's called "running amok." Hmm... The "gang" Berserkergang is like in German, run-way or door-way, entrance or exit, a "way" of some kind. Go through the doorway and come out the other side...berserk.
So there's various other cultures that promote a Dionysian style (I like that) of crazy-mad frenzied combat and  other words exist: Dionysiac, amok, anarchic, ecstatic, enraptured, feral, ferocious, fierce, frantic...
Origin: Portuguese amouco, from Malay amok or Malay amuk, "rushing in a frenzy" from of mengamuk ("to behave amok, to be in an uncontrollable rage").. Early use was as a noun denoting a Malay in a homicidal frenzy - ultimately from Old Javanese.
The U.S. forces in the Philippines in 1900 ran into that, literally, among the Moros - the Muslim Malay peoples living in the southern Philippines where the practice of "running juramentado" was a religious rite.
The word juramentado, meaning oath, was first employed by General Malcampo during the final occupation of Jolo in 1876. The practice of "running juramentado" was a religious rite involving the waging of a jihad, or Holy War, upon infidels. Originally, the practice was conducted by a band of men determined to sacrifice their lives in accomplishing the death of Christians. In the later years of the Spanish conquest, single individuals howled through the streets of Jolo, leaving death in their wake.

The jihad against unbelievers is enjoined in the Koran. In its pure form, the jihad consisted of bona-fide organized warfare against Christians. Juramentado was the degenerate form of jihad evolved by the Sulu Moros.
Which begs the question in Modern usage, where world Religions are promoted as paragons of tolerance and "Faith" (except for Christianity which continues to be media-characterized by the Spanish Inquisition while the pacific teachings of Jesus are ignored), what the hell kind of Religion is it that has specific tenants related to the practice of killing others in warfare?? Oh yeh, this kind:
In the deep silence of early morning, fanatical youths gathered to hear the Imams, or priests, tell of the old days. The stories flamed these ambitious recruits to martyrdom, and custom then necessitated a solemn conference with their parents. After a family council, which usually granted permission for the youth to run juramentado, the youths were banded together with the Sultan's permission to engage in a holy war.

The candidates were then turned over to the Imam for organization and instruction. Prayers were offered and each candidate placed his hand upon the Koran and repeated the following: "Jumanji kami hatunan ing kami ini magsabil karna sing tuhan." (We covenant with God that we will wage this holy war, for it is of God.)
Also we see that this method of frenzy-attack wasn't brought about by any particular act of the later arriving Americans, but was initiated by the Moros specifically as a part of their tactical doctrine. It's simply how they operate.

The 26th Annual Gun Rights Policy Conference

In which I am, flattered to be described as, a leader(s) (sic) in this community:
The 26th Annual Gun Rights Policy Conference is coming up on us pretty quickly (Sept. 23-25 in Chicago).   Considering the huge number of gun rights activists and other interested people active in the online community, SAF is hoping leaders in this community, like you, will help us spread the word.  Equally importantly, we’re hoping you are planning to attend GRPC.  If you haven’t registered yet, please do so.

Attached to this email you’ll find a sign-up form/ad that you can post or forward as you see fit and a banner that can be put up on your site.

On behalf of Alan Gottlieb, myself and everyone else at SAF, thank you in advance for your help and we hope to see you this September in Chicago.

Regards,

Miko Tempski
Director of Legal Affairs
Second Amendment Foundation< James Madison Building, 12500 N.E. Tenth Place, Bellevue, WA 98005

Unfortunately (or not - whatever) I am personally without funds to travel to such a venue, and it's too far (and long and hot) to drive. Plus it's in a most unfortunate (or not) place: Chicago, IL - which is probably actually intentional so good for 'em - stick your finger in their eye!

Sparky Summer Special

In the ongoing saga of Holsterstuffs, I received this little 2nd-hand Milt Sparks beauty from The Packing Rat (AKA Derek). Woot! It's fairly comfortable even walking around empty. Now I just need some 1-3/4" belt loops, so I better give 'em a call.
UPDATE: Belt loops are coming - very nice folks up in Idaho there, one of my favorite places of all time without a doubt.

Another 409

There were a bunch of turkeys roaming in their safe spot, the whole range is a no-shoot for them - this was just half the group heading out into the weeds to forage. It must drive the trap-shooters crazy.
There's always some interesting junk on the rifle-rack, even for California. I shoot with a bunch of rocket scientist from NASA and computer PhD's, besides the usual Cops and ex-Military types after all.
(click to enlarge) The cold and overcast layer began to burn-off by 10:00AM or so and things lightened up. That's because the dense bay-area atmosphere is funnel-sucked down south by the lower valley low-pressure differential - when it starts heating up it just tears apart the cloud cover against the hills as sunlight penetrates and warms the farmland to the south of here. Over behind these hills, a few miles back in a box canyon, they build (and sometimes explode) rocket motors - now that the Shuttle is shuttered I'm not sure what kind of noises will emit, maybe they'll just go commercial and keep up scaring the cows with sudden building eruptions...
I shot on #7 because it's easiest for me to distinguish. It's a dark, slashing vertical mark on a white background that stands-out nicely between two black-background roundy-shapes (8 and 9).
I managed to only drop a single offhand shot into the berm, and was one of only two people who shot X's offhand on the first relay. In rapid-seated (and prone) I also didn't suck horribly, the consistency of point-of-aim with the 55-grain XM-193 helped, but the mil-spec quality left a little to be desired in the slow-prone stage where super accuracy counts, and instead some shot-dispersal occurred. Like one shot would be a 10, and the next would be an 8 at 7:0'clock, then an X and then another eight next to the first one, with two groups developing... Oh well, overall I scored a mid-level Sharpshooter with a 409, and 4x's. It was a good day.

Unseasonably Cold Summmer, Need Earmuffs

Another cold summer with just 64-degrees today and the sun-spots are in diminishment, yet the swollen-headed media haircuts gab on earnestly about globular warming as if it were.  Or as true as a 3rd Grader in dire need of State-Sponsored crayola-crayons and damn-the-Budget-Crisis at Back-to-School time.

Tomorrow is a Match and my rifle is ready, I won't be shooting any special work-up loads, but also no mixed or weird ones - just XM193.  I'm saving the 69-grain Black-Hills match for later when I'm back in the game more. Gotta change (freshen) the batteries in my Peltors Tac 6s' again.  They don't stay clicked-off much, and juice runs out of the batteries - either one ear's bad or the other - or both. Thinking of another alternative, again.

My first ear-muffs were non-electronic Peltor-9's sourced locally that introduced my ears to hand-gunning. Big and bulky, I was safely cosseted in a warm blankie of 29-db quiet reduction. At indoor ranges I added ear-plugs and had to shout a lot. At just $15 or so I still have a pair down in the garage for when I'm working with saws or the shop-vac. Shout if you see me, because I can't hear a damn thing.

Second-set were electronic Caldwells, still inexpensive (around $30) from Midway - but electronic! and I didn't have to SHOUT all the damn time. However still being a bit bulky they kept coming off my head with a firm cheek-weld on the Garand, especially in offhand recoil.   They also suffered from battery inconsistency and a deviated noise-septum, the stereo balance between the ears was off. Cracking them open to change batteries revealed other shortcomings - like corrosion.

Moving to the AR and my first Tactical anything.  The third set were hugely influenced by the participants at my first Gunblogger Rendezvous (II). When I got to the range it seemed everyone was wearing Peltor Tactical (ooh that word) 6S'! I felt so gauche and unsophisticated in my clunky green Caldwell-clodhoppers. So after I drove down the hill from Reno I got a pair, and they are scalloped and allow a nice cheek-weld to the AR - but chew-up and spit-out batteries at a prodigious rate since the rotary switch comes un-clicked easily. And I notice some corrosion on the battery contacts, too.

Some of they guys at the club have spent more lavishly on ear protection. Some have custom made, wax-dripped, molded-in exotic shapes. (Other's have U.S. Army-issued (VA actually) hearing-aids from being deafened while in the Artillery.) Some have the high-zoot over $200 MSA/Sordins which I really like - but I can't really afford that kind of outlay. I can afford batteries from Costco. If you use a pencil eraser you can rub-off the corrosion on the contact points.

Since Pro-Ears is a sponsor at this year's Gunnblogger Rendezvous, I'm looking forward to seeing some hearing protectors for rifle-shooters that allow a good cheek-weld but aren't thrown-off in offhand.

Not Ready for Retail

So I'm wrapping-up a funky LOT (little old thing) we had that's selling-off on eBay, and while taping it in bubble-wrap I snap-off a hunk.  Oy!  Crap!  Gotta end the transaction penniless.
That's my story.  If I had a job I'd be better-off working at Beta Testing where I can break things as is my forte.  Hell, I have X-treme MaJiK-MoJo that can break a whole company.  Proof?  Most every place I worked-at is now gone, *poof*!  (Aside: point of Strunky-U.S. style question: does the asterisk go inside or outside the period?)  Know a company you want taken down?  Find someone there to hire me and they'll be circling the drain an d filing Chapter-11 in two years if the CEO isn't in jail first.
But that's hard to put on the old resume, you get round-filed real fast.

Chuck is awesome

And so is Project Valour IT, the fundraising behind the Gunblogger Rendezvous:

I had to steal this from Mike/Mr. Completely who got it from TrueBlue Sam.
Chuck has attended some of the Gun Blogger Rendezvous' in the past, but now that he's stationed in Hawaii, it's a bit far to travel for him. There WILL be someone at this year's Rendezvous representing Project Valour-IT, and although specifically who it will be has not been confirmed, it's going to be someone you will enjoy meeting if you are there!
I'm somewhat surprised (but shouldn't be) that Chuck/Soldiers Angels Valour-IT has such an extensive(?) YouTube presence (if you go there check the sidebar) or that he made it onto CNN. Go Chuck!

UPDATED AWESOMENESS!
According to Ace of Spades, Working on their monthly fundraising drive, they SCORED!!

Anyhow, among other participants:
GLOCK will be donating a GLOCK pistol certificate for our Project Valour IT fund-raising raffle.
Pro-Ears co-owner Charles Ricci, and his partner are planning to attend this year's Gun Blogger Rendezvous and donating a $329.00 set of electronic hearing protectors to the raffle - and swag for door prizes.
Superhero Gun'torney Alan Gura is going to do his best to be there again at the Rendezvous, subject to scheduling, of course:
"Thanks so much again for your generous invitation. I'd be happy to attend as much of the get together as I can. I'll block off that time on my calendar and avoid setting things for those days. The final details will have to wait. As you may know this is an extraordinarily busy time in the 2A litigation business.."
Among minor celebrities and personalities (besides the most awesomest Gun-Bloggers!) Gun-Up social-media CEO Dan Hall is planning on being there in person, and there's a good chance so will Caleb Giddings, (who now works for GunUp).  GunUp will be hosting our dinner on Friday night.
Make your reservations!

Twin Heat Grillacious Summer-Wonder

I had to convert it to the 1-lb. can to comply with Association and Fire Marshall local regulations, but the parts arrived (smaller diameter gas-jets) and fit and it all works fine. It also needed its own, bigger table since the little round one for the Weber-Q didn't fit underneath those legs. The dual burners are awesome and the USDSA choice New York steaks were freaking amazing!

Fire The Bastard

In case you missed it elsewhere (H/T SayUncle) fire the bastard.
The NRA has a petition to fire Eric Holder.
It's a start, at least...

Fabulous Mammoth

The incredible and Phabulous Phlegmy is always most instructive on Teh Jewelryz, and brings to attention that which is most ancient and beautiful, a fossilized woolly mammoth bone-ring - which somewhat surprisingly is available in a variety of more affordable venues including eBay. And forcibly reminded me of a gift my wife made on our anniversary, that me being a Guy I simply don't often wear: The Jewelz.

Fossilized ivory from an extinct Mammuthus primogenus, carved into a Hawaiian makau, or fishhook.

A creature that was at one time so prevalent that during the Late Pleistocene early humans made entire houses out of their bones.
Mammoth bone huts, structures built primarily from the bones and tusks from mammoths, are known from sites throughout eastern Europe (Russia, Ukraine, Poland) between about 27,000 and 12,000 years ago, with a concentration found in the Dneiper River valley of Russia and Ukraine dated about 15,000 years ago.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High-Justice Department of Clown-Shoed Thugs

Dude!  Was Holder holding the stash for Obama-man!?  H/T Rick while attempting to DOJ Obstructing Fast and Furious Gunwalker probe, they can't get their lies together in any shape fast enough, while email confirms "Gunwalker" was known throughout the Justice Department...
Senior law enforcement officers within the Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security, including government appointees, potentially committed felonies that led to the deaths of dozens, if not hundreds of Mexican police, soldiers, and civilians, and the murders of least two American federal agents. This program was put in place in order to pursue a phantom gun-smuggling network that only seemed to exist in the the minds of those pushing a political agenda of gun control championed exclusively by the left wing of the Democratic Party, Attorney General Eric Holder himself, and the president of the United States, Barack Obama.
Meanwhile the family of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry will sue the federal government, starting with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, seeking information, not a monetary settlement.

Clown-shoe'd thugs, accessories to the murder of a Federal Border Patrol Agent and many Mexican nationals - it's a blockbuster Norman Mailer meets MAD Magazine movie-script in, Spy-vs-Spy The Fast and The Furious and The Naked and the Dead.

The deceitful and purposeful lack of inter-agency coordination and even actual stealth inter-agency attacks reminds me of the current situation in Pakistan – there are two factions (maybe more) knife-fighting under the rug.
There is no trust between bureaucrats at Agencies who covet each others' sphere of influence, and even a Truther is as good as the Truth itself when the blind are following the commands. The Left has always been very-very good at charming-up a smoky mirror-world of Security Apparatus apparatchiks droning away in a dim bureaucracy.  They're experts at such things, in fact it’s STASI-like.

Reminder: Number-Six is Coming Fast

Range Day

7:10AM - It's very quiet (and cool) on Saturday morning.

7:11AM - The freeway is pretty empty.

7:38AM - down by Metcalf I grabbed a McDonalds for breakfast.

7:40AM - crossed the freeway to the hills.

7:42AM - where the hills pastures are already heating up. Extreme fire-danger hereabouts.

8:37AM - and signed in to take a spot.

8:37AM - and there it was.

8:52AM - I was shooting on #3.

9:52AM - target truck during the break between rapid prone and slow prone.

10:25AM -....Hot time, summer in the city, back of my neck feeling dirty and gritty... I suck and shot a 386-2x.

1:06PM - traffic heading down to Gilroy/Morgan Hill is all backed up due to an accident.  Temps in the low 100's.

But it was good anyhow.
Stay out of the fire-danger.  Enjoy your 4th of July fireworks somewhere that it's wet and damp and humid and the whole damn state won't catch goddam fire.
